Does it seem like everyone and their moms has had a c-section—or knows someone who has? It’s not all in your head: Cesarean delivery rates increased by nearly 60 percent between 1996 and 2009. But a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report finds that the rate of cesarean deliveries in the U.S. has leveled off for the first time in 12 years.
Experts credit the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), a nonprofit women’s health care advocacy group, with curbing the upward trend. In 2009, the group launched a public health campaign to discourage physicians and expecting mothers from undergoing unnecessary c-sections.

Why C-Sections Can Be Dangerous

Cesarean deliveries are riskier than vaginal births because cutting into your abdomen exposes you to bacteria, which increases your odds of getting an infection, says George Macrones, MD, a representative for the ACOG. A c-section delivery can also heighten your chances of excessive bleeding, blood clots, and, in rare cases, death, he says.

What’s more, it takes an intense physical toll on your body. While recovering from vaginal birth takes just one to two weeks, post-c-section recovery can last up to six weeks. And after you recover, your c-section could complicate future pregnancies; women who have cesarean deliveries face an increased risk of placenta implantation problems, uterine rupture, bladder and bowel injuries, a second cesarean delivery, and the need for a hysterectomy, according to previous research cited in the ACOG guidelines.

Despite these risks, about 31 percent of U.S. births between 2009 and 2012 were cesarean deliveries. And while there’s no firm data on what portion of these procedures were medically necessary, experts at ACOG estimate that about 8 percent of the total number of c-sections were avoidable.

Why They Became So Popular

It’s known that c-sections come with the complications listed above… so what accounted for the rise between 1996 and 2009? One reason is that c-sections lead to more c-sections. If a woman has already had a baby via cesarean, giving birth to a second child vaginally becomes riskier. Doctors are wary of performing risky procedures, both out of fear of harming the mother, and also out of fear of lawsuits. A 2010 poll published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology showed that 29 percent of obstetrician college members said they were performing more caesareans to avoid being sued.

Another reason is convenience—for both the mother and the doctor. Women may prefer to have c-sections scheduled around when family members might be in town to help them take care of their children, for instance. And older studies have found that c-sections are more common on Fridays and between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. The scary implication: Some doctors might recommend inducing labor so that they don’t have to spend their nights and weekends waiting for the baby to come.

When a C-Section is Your Best

Bet All that being said, sometimes c-sections are necessary to ensure the safety of the mother and child. Like most medical decisions, it’s ultimately up to you and your doctor to determine the best way to deliver your baby. But according to the ACOG, you might be a prime candidate for a c-section if:

-You’re carrying multiples and they’re very small or poorly positioned -Your contractions aren’t strong enough to move the baby on their own -The umbilical cord is pinched or compressed -The baby has an abnormal heart rate -There’s a problem with the placenta -The baby is particularly large or breech -You’re infected with an STI that could infect your baby if it were to go through the birth canal -You have diabetes, which could lead to a larger baby -You have high blood pressure, which can lead to preeclamsia, a dangerous condition that can damage your organs and can only be cured by childbirth (which is why an early-term cesarean delivery may be necessary)

The Bottom Line If you can have a vaginal birth safely, you should, says Macrones. When you give birth the natural way, you face a lower rate of infection and will experience a faster recovery—so you can hit the ground running as a new mom. So before you sign off on a c-section, you should ask your doctor if you can give birth vaginally. Be wary of doctors who encourage c-sections right off the bat—especially if you’re young and relatively healthy.

We all know with craft blogs that original ideas are often hard to come by, we find ideas we love and make them our own but we didn’t come up with the idea ourselves.  I feel like I’ve finally done something original here and I’m excited about it.

I’ll show you the finished product and then explain.Behold my Make-up Magnet Board.
I have a friend who is beautiful and stylish and has always loved make-up but recently took a course that intensified her love.  Her renewed interest has worn off on me and it made me remember eye shadows I’d hidden away that were gathering dust.  I pulled them all out and was shocked at just how many I had.  My old make-up organization/storage consists of a basket that sits on my bathroom counter, I put all my hair stuff and make-up stuff in the basket and used maybe 3 shadows in my daily rotation.  With the addition of my pile of eye shadows it now looked like this.

The basket was a mess and I was overwhelmed with all my choices never knowing what to use, digging through to see what I had and find what I wanted was a pain.  I needed a way to display them all and my brilliant mother and I came up with this idea.

I started by making a magnet board, (nothing original here), I used this super ugly frame I found at Salvation Army.

I painted it (The hard way, with a brush instead of spray paint.  I look forward to spring when the weather lets me spray paint again.) and then glazed it.I went to the hardware store and picked up some metal and had them cut it to fit inside my frame.  Then I used spray adhesive to stick some fabric to the metal.  I put it all back together and it looked like this.
Here comes the brilliant part though.

Here’s the stash of eye shadows we’re talking about (I’ve even added a couple since this picture).

I went to the dollar store and picked up a bunch of magnets and hot glued one to the back of each shadow (I actually needed 3 magnets for my bronzer).  I considered using a stronger glue but when the makeup is empty I want to be able to peel the magnet off, hot glue lets me do that and it’s held up really well.

Next I wanted a place to store my brushes and liners though.  An orange pill container with some oil rubbed bronze spray paint made it beautiful and 3 extra strong magnets glued on the back holds nice and secure.

Now it hangs in my bathroom wall and every morning I’m excited to play with my different make-up.  It feels sort of like art and an expression of me.I thought tomorrow I’d do a little feature of how I use some of this make-up and talk about my favorite products so come back and check it out.  This content has been republished from source for informational purposes.

Like some of you, I’ve tried many, many, MANY makeup storage solutions and none of them lasted more than a few months.  It would seem like a good idea at first, but when used on a day-to-day basis, it wasn’t practical.
One storage solution (the common wooden Ikea box) lasted me the longest.  It held all of my makeup and had enough drawers to keep everything organized.  The big problem was that I couldn’t see everything.  If I don’t see it, I won’t use it.

Then I saw this coffee pod drawer in the weekly Bed Bath & Beyond advertisement and thought it would be perfect.  Sadly, it only lasted a week or two.  The makeup jars rolled from side to side and made a ridiculous amount of noise every time I opened the drawer.

I was getting close to the perfect solution….I could feel it!

I decided not only did I need a makeup drawer, I wanted a small vanity.  That way, I have a place to sit, relax, do my makeup, and Mel wouldn’t have to deal with me taking up counter space in the bathroom.  We made a trip to Ikea and I think I’ve made the perfect vanity to fit my needs!  Every time I walk into the room, I love the vanity more and more.  I think this will last a long time. =)

The glass top allows me to see EVERYTHING.  Love, love, love.

Our bedroom is a little small so this compact vanity is just right.  NOTE:  The Ikea instructions say to either have a support in the middle of the shelf or have the legs/brackets closer together.  Therefore, please follow the instructions carefully if you plan to have a lot of weight on your shelf.  I do not have a lot of weight on there and I don’t lean on the shelf so I’m taking the risk. =)

Acrylic containers (more info below) easily slide in and out.

IMPORTANT:  Do NOT use the screws that come with the legs because they are too long.  Instead, use shorter screws from your local home improvement store.

Products Used:

1. SHELF AND LEGS:  Four Vika Curry legs attached to an Ekby Gruvan shelf (46 7/8″ x 11″).  IMPORTANT:  Do not use the screws that come with the legs because they are too long.  Instead, use shorter screws from your local home improvement store.
Update:   The shelf now only comes in black.  Also, the Vika Curry legs have been discontinued, but the Vika Adils legs are similiar.

2.MIRROR:  Kolja round mirror

3.STOOL:  The Gilbert stool is small and doesn’t take up too much space.  Future project is a cushion to make the seat more comfortable.
Update:  This particular stool has also been discontinued, but another cheap alternative is the Marius stool.

4.CLEAR TRAYS:  Darice Jewelry Designer Bead Storage System with 24 Containers.  I found the acrylic trays in the craft section at Walmart, but you can also find them in the jewelry/bead section at Michaels, www.createforless.com, or Joann Fabric and Craft stores.  Three containers fit on each side of the shelf.  Each bead storage container comes with 24 empty round jars.  After buying 6 containers, I ended up with a ton of jars.  I saved some to use when I travel (i.e. lotion, travel makeup, pills) and gave the rest away to friends.

5.CLEAR ORGANIZER:  The Godmorgon box with compartments goes perfectly on top to hold more makeup products and tools.

NOTES:

1.The shelf is only 11 inches deep.  Therefore, it may be too small for some of you.  If you need a larger vanity, the Vika Gruvan table top is much larger.

2.Since the shelf is not very deep, I don’t have a need for a magnifying mirror because I lean forward and I’m close enough to the wall mirror.  Also, it would take up more room and I like having an empty surface.

3.If you don’t mind putting holes in the wall, the shelf can be used with different kinds of brackets as well.
