Boosting Your Metabolism

Burning fat is all about your metabolism, and you may be selling yourself short when it comes to boosting your potential. Fitness is a bit of a learning curve all its own, but there are more tools at your disposal than you may realize.

Boosting metabolism can generally be done one of two ways. You can move your body and condition your muscles to enhance your fat-burning potential in the short-term and long-term, or you can eat foods that speed things up during digestion. Within each of these approaches are a ton of tips and strategies for losing weight and burning fat.

Today we’re taking a look at 8 simple strategies for boosting your metabolism and torching body fat. Try one, try them all, or just mix up your daily diet and fitness routine.
Either way, you’ve got to try something new to see real results.

Torch Fat with These Metabolism-Boosting Tricks

1. Eat Breakfast
Although all meals are important for different reasons, the earlier you boost your metabolism the more fat you’ll burn all day. So definitely get in a healthy breakfast and increase your overall results.

One easy solution to a fat-burning breakfast is my Ultimate Superfood Smoothie. Whey protein powders like Optimum 100% Casein Protein can help you burn more calories and keep you feeling full all day long.

2. Get Up and Get Moving
A little intense exercise in the morning can also set you off on the right foot. Incorporating even 15 minutes of exercise into your morning routine can go a long way for weight loss. Try a morning run, some jump rope, or even some push-ups and sit-ups.

3. Deal with Stress
Stress can seriously interfere with your fat-burning efforts. Not only can it contribute to weight loss, it also makes you feel unmotivated to hit the gym and stay on track with your healthy eating.

4. Eat Regularly
Keeping food in your system will keep your metabolism revved up and prevent your fat-burning engine from slowing down. Just make sure you snack healthy.
Try these Cajun Lemon Pepper Almonds for a great metabolism-boosting, fat-burning snack idea.

5. Lift Weights
Weight training and resistance training have one of the most lasting effects on your metabolism, improving your ability to burn fat over longer periods of time, and even when you’re at rest. Try to fit in at least three 20-minute weight-training workouts into your week.

6. Add a Little Spice
Adding spices and seasoning to your meals can do more than just improve flavor. Spices can give your metabolism a serious kick and help you burn a few more calories during digestion, in addition to helping you feel full and satisfied. Cinnamon and chili powder are some great examples.

7. Try Some Yoga
The poses and stretches in yoga boost your metabolism in an entirely different way, and condition a lot of muscles not targeted by your standard workout. You could start your day with yoga, incorporate yoga into an afternoon workout, or use it to unwind and burn some calories before bed.
For a great way to get started, try this Gaiam Yoga for Beginners Kit.

8. Snack Before Bed
That’s right, a healthy snack before bed can actually be a good thing. There’s new research out showing that a low-calorie healthy snack can actually keep your metabolism boosted while you sleep.

That’s right, a healthy snack before bed can actually be a good thing. There’s new research out showing that a low-calorie healthy snack can actually keep your metabolism boosted while you sleep.
The Energy Cycle

If you’re like me, I’m sure you’ve experienced many times where you go through a bout of insomnia and wake up with the energy of a tortoise. Â It’s no fun, because it leads down a spiral of being irritable, not having enough energy to workout well, and worst of all getting uncontrollable cravings that sabotage all the hard work you’ve being doing to trim down that damn belly fat.

In the worst of cases, this can also cause relationship trouble at home and even professionally at work so we have to be freaking smart on how we handle our energy and sleep cycle.

If you’ve heard of the circadian rhythm before you have an idea that our clock revolves around the 24 hour cycle and disrupting the clock causes a ripple effect when it comes to your hormone cycle which causes the negative spiral effect.

The good news is that I was able to figure this out with 3 strategies that I’d like share with you so you can improve your sleep and get your energy levels in overdrive.

Follow these solutions for improving your sleep, and I guarantee you’ll see improvements across the board, from keeping the weight off to building lean muscle.

3 Strategies for Waking Up Energized

Exercise Earlier in the Day
People often overlook this one, but exercising too close to bed can be one of the biggest, energy-draining mistakes you can make. Both weight lifting and cardio increase your body temperature enough to keep you from falling asleep. Cardiovascular exercise is particularly bad for this.
I recommend getting your cardio or weight training workout done first thing in the morning to jumpstart your metabolism and get your energized for the rest of the day. If time is a challenge then you can split it up and do some cardio right after work but no later than 6pm. This kind of schedule will ensure the best results and also improve your recovery time, but best of all allow your body to cool off in time for a good night’s sleep.

Watch What You Eat Before Bed
Snacks and drinks before bed aren’t uncommon, but you’ve got to start being smarter about what you eat before bed. Skip the alcohol, as once it wears off, it actually acts as similar as a stimulant and will wake you up. As for snacking, make sure it’s low in sugar and is light on calories. Foods like bananas, cherries, nuts, and complex carbohydrates like baked yams are all good late night snacks.

If you like to sip on something before bed, go with something natural like chamomile tea, which actually promotes sleep. Herbal teas are also a great way to control cravings and suppress your appetite, giving your metabolism a little boost in the process.

Breathe a Little Easier
Breathing also plays a big role in sleep, and many of us suffer from problems with breathing (snoring) that can wreak havoc on our sleep and totally leave us feeling tired and drained the next day.

Now if you have seasonal allergies, this may be exacberating your breathing problems.  Making sure you have a clean bedroom and sheets free of dust is paramount.
In addition I found a neti pot or some other all-natural nasal flush (such as a saline solution) really helped me breathe freely when going to be.

These are just a few easy solutions to improve your sleep and wake up feeling energized. If you’re still suffering from poor sleep and waking up tired, you might also want to try a natural herbal solution like a non-habit forming Natrol Melatonin. When I’ve been rolling around in bed with no end in sight I’ve found taking this occasionally is of great help so you may want to have it handy.

Firm the Heck Up & Get Beach Ready

It’s easy to get lost in a battle of attacking your self-confidence when it’s time to get into a swim suit and it doesn’t matter whether you’re a girl or a guy we all face it.

It will take dedication and some sweat and excuses can go to hell so we all just have to accept it right?  The fact of the matter is that we all love looking and feeling our best and this is an untouchable emotion that we can forget during weak times of stress, lack of sleep or those damn hunger cravings.

The good news is that we’re going to attack getting beach ready from all angles and together they are going to give rocking results.

Here is the plan…

7 Ways to Get Swim Suit Ready

1. Start Lifting Weights at the Gym – If all you’re doing is cardio, you need to get serious about weight training. Not only will you look tighter and more toned (in all the right places), you’ll also boost your metabolism in a significant way.

Working out in the mornings and evenings will give you the best results, boosting your metabolism for the day and helping you build muscle while you sleep. And to get optimal support of lean muscle growth, I recommend taking a whey protein supplement like Optimum 100% Casein Protein and a BCAA (branched chain amino acid) complex like BPI Sports Best BCAA. In combination, these supplements will maximize your muscle growth and get you results in half the time.

2. Focus on Your Glutes and Core – Your core muscles (abdominal and lower back) and glutes (butt muscles) are going to have the biggest visual impact when it comes to your swim suit – so give them extra attention!

Things like planks, squats, lunges, and deadlifts are all the best exercises to get that core tight and firm.

3. Drink Lots of Water – You’ve heard it before, but it’s true. Drinking water can effectively improve your digestion and reduce your fat deposits, in addition to making you feel more full and satisfied.
Staying hydrated during your workout is especially important. For optimal hydration, try coconut water – it contains additional nutrients that will give your metabolism a kick!

4. Get More Natural Diuretics in Your Diet – Diuretics like caffeine and green tea will speed up your metabolism, suppress your appetite, and get you burning more fat and calories. You can find them naturally in foods like cucumbers, lemon, and asparagus, or get them in a green tea extract like Irwin Naturals Green Tea Fat Metabolizer.

Also, if you want to take it to the next level one of the leading, naturally-derived metabolism-boosters currently on the market is 7-Keto LeanGels. It’s pretty good for fast results in time for summer or any beach trip.

5. Cut Down on Carbs – Simple carbohydrates like the ones found in breads, pastas, and starches are just deadly for your midsection. One of the fastest ways to look more toned and fit is to cut down on carbs significantly and eat more veggies and protein.

6. Monitor Your Alcohol Intake – This one may be difficult with summer approaching, but consider this your preparation period. Before the summer partying hits, take it easy on the alcoholic beverages.
Removing these extra calories from your diet will have a big impact on how you look in that swim suit. At the least, go for drinks that are less sugary!

7. Engage Your Core – Since so much depends on your core muscles, engage them on a daily basis. Simple things like stretching, standing up taller, and tightening your stomach muscles while you sit can actually go a long way to help you look more toned. Not hard, you just go to remember it!

Lose It Now

If you’re in a state of “holey crap” why didn’t I attack this fat sooner, you’re going to get 12 easy and effective ways to lose fat quicker than Kim Kardashian’s ability to take another selfie.
The good news is that if you get serious and commit to as many of these tips as possible, then you’ll be able to accelerate you fat loss by hitting it from all angles.

12 Easy & Effective Ways to Lose Fat Fast

1. Get Intense with Interval Training – High intensity interval training (HIIT) is one of the best ways to burn fat in a short period of time. By alternating between short bursts of high intensity exercises, you’ll boost your metabolism and condition your muscles in a new way. For more information on HIIT, read about it here – High Intensity Interval Training.

2. Give Up on Spot Training – When it comes down to it, the sad truth is that spot reduction just doesn’t work. To effectively lose fat in any area of your body, you need to work out your whole body and enhance your overall metabolism.  This is especially true for those of you out there who dislike working out your legs.  Your legs are some of the biggest muscles in your entire body and doing squats & lunges will drastically help you burn more fat simply by the shear energy these large muscle requires to burn every day.

3. Eat More Protein – Protein is definitely the closest thing to a magic ingredient when it comes to fat loss. Not only does it keep you full and help you avoid cravings, it also burns more calories and fat during digestion.

4. Get Serious about Weight Training – Resistance training is one of the best ways to enhance your metabolism over the long-term and burn calories and fat even while at rest. Your body composition, and especially your percentage of muscle mass, if directly related to your body’s ability to burn fat. For a really effective weight training routine, check out my killer Total Body Workout here.

5. Cut Down on Carbs – I’m not a supporter of cutting out carbs entirely from your diet. It’s not practical, and it’s not healthy. But reducing your carbohydrate intake, as well as limiting your intake to whole grains and unrefined carbs, will help you lose some serious fat fast.

6. Sleep Better – Poor sleep has been shown to wreak havoc on your metabolism and appetite. In fact, one night of bad sleep and you’ll find yourself with some pretty serious cravings through the day. Get your sleep on track, and everything gets easier, including fat loss.

7. Sprint More – Sprinting is a really effective exercise for burning fat that many people overlook. You need to find the right space, but these quick bursts of movement will help you shed the weight in a serious way.

8. Start Juicing – Juicing is a great way to fuel your body and drastically improve your intake of vitamins, minerals, and other important nutrients. It’s also a great way to boost your metabolism and detox naturally, making it a totally effective fat loss strategy. Try one of my 5 Juicing Recipes for Weight Loss here.

9. Try Yoga – If you’re bored of your workout and need to change things up a bit, try adding yoga to your routine. It’s a great way to condition your muscles, and you’ll be surprised by just how much of a workout it is!

10. Change Things Up on a Regular Basis – Unfortunately, your body stops responding to the same exercises over time. To keep seeing results, whether in losing fat or building muscle, you need to constantly try new things.

11. Take a CrossFit Class – Much like interval training, CrossFit can help you burn some serious calories, and in a very short period of time. It’s intense, but the results totally speak for themselves.

12. Have One Less Coffee a Week – This one is a bit of an over-generalization but if you are having your coffee with sugar and cream then cutting out just one of those coffee drinks a week is about 120+ calories, and if you cut that out for a month that’s almost 500 less calories a week.  Even though I don’t recommend my clients get too focused on calorie counting at the end of the day these liquid calories do add up to a lot and slowly creep up on your waist line.
